How Does it all Work?

So, how does it all work?

That’s an excellent question and a bit of a tricky one to answer fully.

I was looking up at a high window in my living room the other day. It was warm and all the doors and lower windows had been open to let the air move freely. A butterfly had flown in and had become trapped on the inside of this high window, flapping and flapping and trying to find it’s way out in the only way that made sense to it, through the glass. As I watched the wretched creature battling I thought how it would seem like going through the glass must look like the only option, the logical solution to the problem. After all, there was the outside world, just there.

I felt sorry for the little creature, spending precious moments of it’s short life in such a hopeless activity so I got the ladder out, climbed up, gently trapped the butterfly and released it outside where it flew off to enjoy the rest of it’s little life and I thought…

That’s just like my work with clients.

You have a problem that you’re dealing with - your body focused repetitive behavior - and you battle with it year in and year out. Sometimes you think that you’re making progress but then, like the butterfly, you hit your head against a barrier you don’t even realise is there and fall to the ground again, weaker and weaker each time, feeling hope dwindling.

But how can this be? The outside world is just there, so close…

You don’t know what you don’t know and sometimes you just need someone else to get the ladder out, climb up and gently help you to find your way.

And that’s how it works.
